MAKE YOUR OWN BABY FOOD

When my babies were just starting out on solids; that is, in the "tasting" stage, I simply just picked up pieces of food like sweet potato & carrots from our Slow-Cooked Soups and mashed them up. (For some suitable soup recipes, do look at my Other Recipe WebPage).  Or I would give them bits of soft tofu. It's so convenient! Not much preparation needed!

When they got older, I would prepare food for them in BIG batches, then store them straightaway in the freezer. To make it easier for use later, I freeze them in ice-cube trays. When frozen, I take them out & store them in those  "Ziplock"-type Freezer Bags. When needed, I just put a couple of cubes to warm up in the microwave. Again, very  convenient! Some of you may not feel comfortable with this method of feeding your baby food stored in the freezer, and baby's grandma/babysitter may even object, but I must say that neither of my kids have suffered any adverse effects like "wind" from this practice.  Oh, and making minced fruit into iced popsicles is a great way of getting fruits (& roughage) into your kids!

Here are some of my favourite & simple Baby Food Recipes! I hope you enjoy them!

Baby Food Recipes  (from Sam's Kitchen)

"BABY" VEGETABLES

Frozen Mixed Vegetables (get the packet ones from supermarkets)
Broccoli, washed

For this recipe, estimate the amount you wish to use. You can also use other vegetables like Spinach, if you like.

Put the vegetables in a bowl with a little HOT water. Cover with a Microwave Plastic Wrap. Microwave for about 4 to 5mins (I use a 900Watt Microwave Oven). Then chop up the vegetables using an Electric Blender/Chopper.

You can use the vegetables straight away, or freeze them in ice-cube trays then when frozen, transfer into freezer bags to store in freezer.

I've found these cubes of vegetables very convenient especially when mixing the baby's food, and even my toddler's food. Like for eg. if I want to share my noodles with my Toddler but I feel there are not enough vegetables in it, I just defrost some to mix in it.

"BABY" FRUITS

Ingredients:
A variety of fruits. I usually just use apples & pears together.

Cut each fruit into quarters, then put in bowl & cover to microwave for about 4mins. Then chop it up with an Electric
Blender/Chopper.

You can use immediately or store it by first freezing in ice-cube trays. When frozen, transfer the fruit cubes to freezer bags to store in freezer.

Again, these fruit cubes are convenient for dessert or for mixing with baby's cereal (I usually mix baby cereal with fruit for breakfast). I also use this as a topping for my preschooler's pancakes (which I also make a batch of to freeze). Sometimes I add yoghurt to fruit for this pancake topping.   For older children, these are great for putting into popsicle molds to make "ice cream"!!! But to prevent wastage, I prefer to use the soft ice-cube trays like those you can get from IKEA - my favourite is the red one with heart-shaped molds.  I cut the ice-cream sticks into half and stick them into the ground-up fruit.  When frozen, they are like tiny "ice-cream", but healthy!  And great too if yours is a child who does not like to eat that much fruit on their own.

PASTA

4 or 5 Tablespoons of Tiny "ABC" Pasta
(this is the tiniest I can find in the supermarkets. Look for it. NTUC has it)

4 Tbsp of Lentils, rinsed
1/2 cup frozen mixed vegetables
1/2 cup Broccoli Florets, washed

Put the "ABC" pasta with the lentils in a small pot with HOT water and cook until it boils. Then turn down the heat & slowly simmer for another 15 to 20mins until both the pasta & lentils are soft.

Put the frozen mixed vegetables & the broccoli in a bowl with a little HOT water. Cover with Microwave Plastic Wrap. Put in microwave to cook on high for about 4 to 5mins. Then put in an Electric Blender/Chopper to chop the vegetables
fine.

Mix the chopped vegetables with the pasta/lentil mixture. It is then ready to eat!

RICE PORRIDGE

1 Cup washed Rice Grains
1/2 cup to 3/4 cup fresh WhiteBait or White Fish Fillet (eg. Threadfin), - marinated in 1/2 tsp soya sauce
2 Tbsp Minced Onion
2 Tbsp Minced Garlic (You may use more of this onion & garlic, if you like)
Optional 1 portion of "Sei San" Herbs (Chinese 4-Herbs): "Fook Lin", "See Sat", "wai san", lotus seeds/"leen chee".
1 portion of "Baby" Vegetables, cooked as described above

Put the rice in Crockpot filled 1/2 full with HOT water. Add the minced onions & garlic. PLUS a few pieces of the sliced fish or whitebait. Cook on HIGH for about 1 to 2 hrs until porridge is done.

[Note: If you are using the "sei san" herbs, put these in the crockpot to cook the night before (without the rice grains). By morning, it should be soft. Grind it up with blender and set aside for adding to the porridge when done. You then proceed to cook the rice porridge as above but using the water that you'd used to cook the herbs.]

Put in the remaining fresh WhiteBait or White Fish Fillet and let it continue cooking for another 5mins.
Add in the cooked minced vegetables just before serving (so the vegetables don't turn "yellow").
Because of the Onions & Garlic, the porridge is very tasty. You don't need to add any seasoning AT ALL! My babies love it!
