Don't let the discomfort
of sore nipples interrupt your special breastfeeding relationship. Experience
soothing relief with Lansinoh, the world's purist lanolin. Lansinoh for
Breastfeeding Mothers is the only topical endorsed by La
Leche League International.
Hypoallergenic and completely
natural, Lansinoh is recommended for the treatment of sore nipples. It
has been shown in controlled clinical studies to significantly decrease
usual healing time and to decrease pain. This happens because when
Lansinoh is applied to injured nipple/areolar skin tissue it slows down
the evaporation
of the skin's natural moisture,
providing a moisture barrier that allows the skin to rehydrate from within.
This process is known as moist wound healing,
the most up-to-date method for accelerated healing which eliminates the
formation of scabs/crusts.
In addition to accelerated
healing, Lansinoh provides immediate diminishment of pain. Application
of Lansinoh to the injured nipple area places the free nerve endings (they
sense pain) in a more normal environment. Rather than the free nerve endings
drying out and abrading against each other, in the Lansinoh medium they
remain lubricated which results in less pain being perceived.
Lansinoh is of such high
purity that it does not need to be removed prior to breastfeeding.
It can be used with confidence by mothers with conditions such as eczema
or psoriasis on their nipples.
How
to Use Lansinoh
If
you have a tendency to dry skin, you may begin using Lansinoh in your third
trimester. Lansinoh can be used once or twice daily will help condition
the skin, making the nipple protractile and supple. With clean hands, soften
a small amount between fingertips and apply to the entire nipple area.
In
the initial postnatal period, Lansinoh should be applied to the entire
nipple area before and after breastfeeding or as required, to provide
soothing relief, and to protect and moisturise. With stretching of the
breast skin during pregnancy and breastfeeding, using Lansinoh helps improve
the smoothness, elasticity and moisture balance of the nipple, making it
better able to cope with the demands of breastfeeding in the baby 1st few
days.
For
mothers with dry sensitive skin, you might also want to apply some Lansinoh
to your breast and nipples before you take a bath or go for a swim.
This is to protect from the drying pool waters or bath & soaps.
As you can tell, the use
of Lansinoh is not limited only to nipples.
It is also an excellent intensive moisturising treatment for the whole
family. It heals fissures and rehydrates severely dry skin
anywhere on the body, assisting in healing chapped
lips, cracked heels, nappy rash, and dry hands (so common to mothers of
young children). . And see tip below too!

If
you use wool breastpads or wool diapers/covers, these usually come untreated
with natural lanolin on it. Wool is water resistant because of the
natural lanolin present, however as time goes on, some of the lanolin wears
off, so they need to be re-lanonlized. It's easy with Lansinoh! And
because you can re-lanolize, wool products can last through many children!
To re-lanolize, dissolve 1 or 2 ounces
of Lansinoh Lanolin in very HOT water. Let the water cool.
(Note: Do not put in the wool items while the water is hot or it
will shrink). Put in the wool items and let them soak in the lanolin
water overnight. Gently, very lightly, rinse in cool water. Roll
in a towel to get out excess moisture, then set them out to dry in a hot
dry place. Do this about once a month. A suitable Wool Wash does add some
lanolin, but truly re-lanonizing is more effective. If you like to
rinse your wool products, then use Woolite, which is made to be rinsed,
so that no residue is left behind. Hope the tip helps!
