The hydrogel
dressings make use of the concept of "moist wound healing". Research
by enterstomal therapists show that healing of broken skin is promoted
through moist wound healing techniques. These involve keeping the
wound moist and warm, preventing scab formation and accelerating healing.
Hydrogel dressings & Lansinoh
promote these moist wound healing techniques.Rapid healing would be essential
to relieve the pain, maintain a comfortable breastfeeding relationship
and prevent mastitis. Cracked nipples are also an entry point for bacteria
- restoring skin integrity is the best barrier to infection.
Wear for relief
when not nursing and simply remove to nurse your baby. MotherMates may
be used over and over many times. A normal bra pad, which can stick to
sore nipples, is painful to peel off. MotherMates come off easily due to
their slightly tacky texture. For an extra soothing effect, place in the
refrigerator prior to use. They are especially good in the
first few days and weeks of nursing. They are also especially good for
nipples that are not healing because they are cracked and have open areas
of skin.
I have personally
used these hydrogel discs myself for healing cuts from my
son's broken teeth. I found them to be extremely effective for
skin that could be in direct contact with the hydrogel discs. But
for hard-to-cover areas like the base of the nipple where I tended to get
the cuts, I used Lansinoh
cream.
There is no need to wash
prior to feeding, but the Hydrogel discs should be removed before nursing.
Each dressing can be used for 1-7 days and only needs rinsing with cool
water to clean the surface area if needed. Do not use soap to clean the
dressings.
