NURSING NIGHTWEAR

Do you find your tummy getting cold while nursing at night?  Especially if you nurse while lying down at night, and often falling asleep while doing so?  Especially so if you have the airconditioner on in your bedroom?

If so, then you may find it more convenient to have some form of nursing nightwear.  There are some specially designed nursing relax-wear, which would be just comfy for you to lounge around the house.    For others who prefer separates, some have simply bought our Moms in Mind Nursing T-Shirts and used them with their shorts & pants as nightwear - "because they're so cheap, anyway" (their comments).

To make your own, try getting cheap t-shirts. Try to find those shops that sell 3 for S$10 to get their gathered waist shorts & long pants.
Nightgown for NursingFor myself, I have made "cheap & good" nursing nightwear by converting Ready-to-Wear stuff that I buy, and of course I have sewed nighties & pyjamas(PJs) from scratch myself too.

I especially enjoyed the great convenience of the Nursing PJs when I was last in hospital with Timmy's Birth (May 1999).  I sewed the PJs with long-sleeved nursing top & long gathered-waist pants.  Real comfy even for immediate postpartum and just nice for the air-conditioned hospital room and for nursing baby at night - especially with baby rooming-in !  I didn't have to worry about blankets (because I was nicely covered in my long-sleeve/long-pants PJs) and I didn't have to worry about my nightie riding very unmodestly all the way up my tummy while the night nurses came in to check on me during the night.  Very shy, lah!

If you're interested in making some nursing nightwear for yourself, here's some instructions.  I'm not going to teach you how to make nursing nightwear from scratch here (a little more complicated, if you're not into sewing).  Just how to make the "cheap & good" ones.  Very easy.

1. Look for real "cheapo" Big-Tees on the Clearance Racks.  I have had success finding such at market stores in Yishun, Ang Mo Kio, and even Pasir Ris (sorry, don't know about other parts of Singapore).  You can sometimes find suitable ones from "pasar malam" (night market) stalls too.  I'm talking about those "3 for S$10" Big-Tees.  The Green Big-Tee in the photo is one such tee-shirt - quite a great find, I must say, since the print & material (a mesh t-shirt material) is pretty good  considering the price!

2.  Buy 2 in the same design.  This means that if you manage to find a good selection of the "3 for S$10" Big-Tees, you can buy 6 Big-Tees.  That means 3pairs, so that you can make 3 nighties, right?  Of course, the quantity you wish to buy is up to you, but the idea is that to make ONE nursing nightie, you need to buy 2 Big-Tees.

3.  I then cut big-tee (A) in 1/2 and hem it.  Cut the sleeves of Big-Tee (B).  Layer the halved big-tee (A)  over the long big-tee (B) & sew them together at armholes, shoulders, & at neckline (just one over the other such that the inner neckline doesn't show).

I also sew the hem of halved Big-Tee (A) down onto Big-tee (B) at the back (not the front though - need that to be left open for nursing!).

I cut 2 nursing slits on the front of Big-Tee (B).

To finish, I even cut off the  "back bodice" part of Big-Tee(B) so that it won't be so hot. Big-Tee (A) will be covering this part.

Voila!  Now you have a nursing nightie!  You can use the same method to make yourself some nursing pyjama tops.
